UNIVERSITY OPHTHALMOLOGY CONSULTANTS

CASE OF THE MONTH

CASE #19

WHAT IS THE DIAGNOSIS?

  • Early during the evaluation, we suspected that the ocular complications were due to an adverse effect of one or more of the patient’s medications.
  • The clinical manifestation of this patient’s condition is consistent with occlusive disease involving second- and third-order retinal vessels.
  • The initial differential diagnosis included Purtscher-like retinopathy, noninfectious vasculitis with secondary vascular occlusion, and viral retinitis, ie, progressive outer retinal necrosis.

How should the patient be treated at this point?
