CASE OF THE MONTH

CASE #21

WHAT DO THE MRI SCANS SHOW?

Axial Brain MRI Flair Images
  • Numerous lesions in the white matter within the subcortical fibers (no pathologic enhancement of these lesions).
  • An area of superficial enhancement of the left sylvian fissure (pattern suggestive of a pial or a subarachnoid angioma).
  • Just to the right of the foramen of Monro is a lesion of hyperintensity, which shows enhancement with contrast. This does not result in obstruction of the ventricular system and probably represents a subependymal hamartoma or giant cell astrocytoma.

Why should a CT scan of the brain be performed at this point?
